Baghdad, Iraq
As part of its commitment to fostering collaboration between civil society and decision-makers, Al-Mesalla Organization for Human Resources Development presented a policy recommendation paper on Iraq’s Climate Change Response Plan to Dr. Nizar Amedi, Minister of Environment, and Dr. Majid Shankali, Chair of the Health and Environment Committee in the Iraqi Parliament.
The paper was developed following three dialogue sessions held in Baghdad, Sulaymaniyah, and Mosul, which brought together 35 academics, experts, and civil society representatives. The discussions focused on four critical sectors most affected by climate change: energy, transportation, water, and agriculture/forestry.
The recommendations provide practical steps to support government efforts in addressing environmental challenges, including:
- Accelerating the transition to renewable energy;
- Ending the flaring of associated gas;
- Advancing sustainable transportation systems;
- Protecting water resources;
- Preserving forests and wetlands.
Ibrahim Ismail, Executive Director of Al-Mesalla Organization, emphasized the importance of partnerships between civil society and government in developing effective and sustainable environmental policies. He noted that the recommendations aim to provide actionable solutions to mitigate climate change impacts while promoting sustainable development across Iraq.
